The planet Saturn in astrology - for which its meanings are also responsible. Aurora Gallery

Saturn got its name in honor of the ancient Roman god of crops, the patron saint of agriculture, the father of Jupiter. Seeing Saturn surrounded by rings through a telescope will take your breath away.

With its ring system, Saturn is an impressive sight in any size telescope. The rings are made up of countless pieces of ice ranging in size from a grain of dust to chunks the size of a house. They form three broad rings, which are designated A, B, and C, beginning with the outer one. The two Voyager expeditions recorded hundreds of very narrow rings that make up the main rings. The bright A and B rings are separated by a seemingly empty Cassini slit. According to Voyager, this is not a gap between the rings at all, but a space less densely filled with matter.

The probable origin of the rings was first proposed in the 19th century. French mathematician Edouard Roche, who suggested that a small satellite that got too close to the planet could be torn apart by tidal forces. Perhaps in the past, one or more celestial objects were closer to the "Roche limit" of Saturn and were torn into pieces, forming rings.

Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune also have rings, but they are not as large or as easy to see as Saturn's.

The unique poles of Saturn also attract the attention of researchers. Hexagon - North Pole planets, which is a regular counterclockwise rotating hexagon.

Satellites of Saturn

Saturn knows 18 natural satellites, of which Titan is the second largest in solar system after Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter. Titan has an atmosphere composed of nitrogen and methane. The diameter of Titan is 5150 km, and it is the only known satellite that has an atmosphere.
Other satellites of Saturn have a surface covered with ice and dotted with craters. Mimas' giant impact crater, dubbed Herschel, was formed by a collision that nearly destroyed the moon. Iapetus (diameter 1440 km) is a mystery. Its rear hemisphere is similar to other satellites. However, the leading hemisphere reflects only one tenth of the light falling on it - it is covered with a dark reddish layer of unknown origin.

Watching Saturn

When you first observe it through a telescope, you will remember this event for a long time. Even through binoculars, when the rings are indistinguishable, its elongated shape cannot be confused with anything. Thanks to space developments, many technologies have become available to the average person, for example, 3D X-ray allows you to get a high-quality three-dimensional image of an object, although a few years ago this was considered science fiction.
Although the shadows on Saturn are less clear and change much more slowly than on Jupiter, the planet's rings are always of great interest. You can see Titan in almost any small telescope, and in a 150mm telescope you can see three other satellites.
Unlike Jupiter's moons, which always appear to line up, Saturn's moons can appear above or below the planet because its axis of rotation, like Earth's, is tilted to the plane of its orbit. Since Saturn's orbital period around the Sun is 29 years, the appearance of the rings changes slowly. In some years they will be deployed to us, and about once every 14 years they will turn edge-on. During the Saturnian year, the rings will be in the best position for observation twice - once we will be able to look at them from above and once from below.

the planets of the solar system. The study of the planet, satellites, rings, the history of discovery, the launch of the Voyager and Cassini spacecraft with a photo.

One of the most beautiful and amazing sights can be found in our solar system. It is the 6th planet in terms of distance from the Sun and one of the largest gas giants- Saturn. It is enough to get close to the planet to admire thousands of thin rings created from small lines of material with delight. In addition, 62 satellites, differing in size, rotate nearby. Seven of them are so huge that they could become places for future colonies. Let's take a closer look at what the Saturn system looks like.

Rings and moons of the Saturn system

Satellites Janus and Tethys "hung" on the ring

Of course, the most striking feature of the planet Saturn is its ring system. Represented by fragments of water ice. These fragments may be dust, but they can grow to the size of a machine. They cover 282,000 km, but are extremely thin. So, if the planet is oriented sideways to us, then they are practically invisible.

The rings of Saturn were first discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. The first surveys noted two arcs, but the arrival of the device recorded thousands of small ones. Recent observations show that the system is much more complex than previously thought. There are thin sections and spiral structures. We also found that some rings are fixed in place and replenished from neighboring satellites.

The family of Saturn's satellites consists of 62 representatives, among which 7 stand out for their scale. The largest is Titan, which is larger than Mercury. Others are smaller, and there is also a group of captured asteroids.

24 objects fall into the class of regular moons. They make revolutions in an almost circular orbit and correspond in direction to the planetary one. It is believed that they appeared at the same time as the planet, merging from the materials of an ancient nebula. The remaining 38 are irregular, which means they are more distant, inclined, and the orbital path is characterized by eccentricity. Many of them are endowed with retrograde orbits (the direction of rotation does not converge with the planetary one). It is believed that they were previously asteroids captured by the gravity of Saturn.

There is a group of tiny moons close to the ring system. Their gravity affects the formation of rings and the preservation of their structure. They also create gaps between the rings.

Exploring the Saturn system

Despite the great distance from the Sun, scientists have explored Saturn. 4 were sent to the planet space missions. In 1979, Pioneer 11 was the first to launch. It flew close to the cloud cover and sent back low-resolution images of the planet and several moons. But the images weren't good enough to highlight the tiny structures. However, we managed to find the F-ring and understand that the gaps between the rings are filled with thin material.

Voyager 1 arrived in 1980 and Voyager 2 arrived in 1982. Scientists have obtained a photo of Saturn in more than high resolution, which helped to display many new satellites, as well as a complex ring system - they consist of thousands of arcs.

In 2004, the Cassini spacecraft went into orbit for the first time. He photographed the planet and studied the rings and satellites. They also managed to land the Huygens probe on the surface of Titan. The device confirmed the presence of liquid methane lakes. It turned out to find 4 new moons and fix liquid geysers on Enceladus. Cassini also managed to pass between the planet's rings and plunge into its atmosphere for the first time in 2017.

Missions to Enceladus and Titan are expected in the future. Among them is TSSM, in which NASA and ESA are collaborating. But the exact date is still unknown.

Composition of the Saturn system

Saturn's potential for self-improvement is important for overcoming self-doubt and gaining confidence. By working with this card, you will not only strengthen your strength, but also gain a deeper understanding of those aspects of life that may have caused your problems in the past. Life will become much easier when you realize that problems are the best way attaining wisdom and gaining inner strength if you are willing to work and learn from experience. If your Saturn Card is one of the figure cards, not only do you have a special gift, but you can be strongly influenced by other people in the area of acquisition of responsibility. Usually this Strong woman in the case of a Lady and a strong man in the case of a King.

Almost immediately after the pair of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes entered the Saturnian system in the 1980s, scientists began dreaming of a new mission. This was due to the fact that the Voyagers were the first man-made vehicles to reach Saturn, and the information they provided to scientists was like a "seed" for them, after which they began to want more and more new research. The Vodyazher receiver, the Cassini spacecraft, has spent ten years orbiting Saturn, taking beautiful pictures of its system of rings and moons. But the work still doesn't stop. Recently, according to the data of the device, new color maps of the six main icy satellites of the planet were compiled. In essence, Cassini has completed another of his many missions.

The following satellites of Saturn (with the exception of Titan covered in fog) have been studied: Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea and Iapetus. Apart from data gaps at the north pole of Enceladus and some areas of Iapetus (these data will become available next year), this mission goal was fully achieved. And now, NASA experts invite us to admire how the presentation of information about Saturn's satellites has changed in the time interval between the Voyager and Cassini missions.

These final maps are the best color images of the moons to date and the first to accurately show natural variations in brightness and color simultaneously and in high resolution. The colors on the maps represent a wider range than the human eye can see, going slightly into the infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths of light. Through the use of these spectra, our eye can perceive this expanded palette.

Enceladus

Tethys

Dione

Rhea

Iapetus

Mimas

These enhanced color images led to several important discoveries regarding Saturn's icy moons. The most obvious are the differences in color and brightness between the two hemispheres of Tethys, Dione and Rhea. The dark reddish colors on the hemispheres of these satellites demonstrate the variety of charged particles and radiation in the planet's magnetosphere. The exceptions are Mimas and Iapetus, which are covered in dust from Saturn's E ring, which in turn is formed from tiny particles erupting from the South Pole of Enceladus.

In the natal chart, Saturn is associated with everything heavy and gloomy. Many astrologers blame him for human troubles and misfortunes, because traditionally it is a planet of problems and difficulties. Saturn governs poisons, so poisonous lead is considered its metal.

Symbolism of Saturn

Saturn is the last planet that can be seen with the naked eye as a barely visible dot from Earth. What is beyond the orbit of Saturn is no longer our world. Thus, acting as a cosmic guardian, Saturn separates our world from everything else, separates the internal and external, personal and collective.
