“Each new language expands the consciousness of a person and his world. It's like one more eye and one more ear," says Daniel Stein, the hero of Ludmila Ulitskaya's book. Would you like to expand your picture of the world and find a common language with more than a billion people? For those who answered yes, we will tell you how to start learning English. We hope that our guide will help beginners take their first steps and show the right path for those who continue to learn the language.

To get started, we invite you to watch a recording of a two-hour webinar with Victoria Kodak(a teacher and methodologist of our online school), in which she answers the question of how to start learning English in the most detailed way:

1. Introduction: When and how best to start learning English

Some adults believe that only children can start learning English from scratch. Someone thinks that it is a shame for an adult to start from the basics and learn elementary rules and words, someone believes that only children can successfully learn foreign languages, because they have an excellent memory and learning abilities. Both the first and second opinions are wrong. There is nothing shameful in the fact that you start learning a language as an adult, on the contrary: the desire for knowledge always commands respect. According to the statistics of our school, people begin to learn the language from the first stage and at 20, and at 50 and even at 80 (!) years old. Moreover, they do not just start, but successfully study and reach high levels of English proficiency. So no matter how old you are, what matters is your desire to learn and your willingness to improve your knowledge.

Many people ask themselves: “What is the best way to start learning English?”. First you need to choose the way of learning that suits you: in Group, individually with a teacher or on one's own. You can read about the pros and cons of each of them in the article "".

The best option for those who are going to learn the language "from scratch" is classes with a teacher. You need a mentor to explain how the language "works" and help you build a solid foundation for your knowledge. The teacher is your interlocutor who:

  • help you start speaking English;
  • explain grammar in simple words;
  • teach to read texts in English;
  • It will also help you develop your English listening comprehension skills.

For some reason, you do not have the desire or opportunity to study with a teacher? Then check out our step by step guide about self-study of English for beginners.

To begin with, we want to give you some tips on how to better organize your classes so that your efforts are not in vain. We recommend:

  • Exercise at least 2-3 times a week for 1 hour. Ideally, you need to practice English every day for at least 20-30 minutes. However, if you want to arrange a weekend for yourself, do it every other day, but in double volume - 40-60 minutes.
  • Work on speaking skills. Write short texts, read simple articles and news, listen to podcasts for beginners, and try to find someone to talk to to train your speaking skills.
  • Immediately put into practice what you have learned. Use the studied words and grammatical constructions in oral and written speech. Simple cramming will not give the desired effect: knowledge will fly out of your head if you do not use it. Learned a dozen words - make up a short story using all these words, say it out loud. We studied the Past Simple time - write a short text in which all sentences will be in this tense.
  • Don't "Spray". The main mistake of beginners is trying to take as many materials as possible and work with them all at the same time. As a result, the study turns out to be unsystematic, you get confused in the abundance of information and do not see progress.
  • repeat the past. Don't forget to review what you've learned. Even if it seems to you that you know the words on the topic “Weather” by heart, return to them in a month and check yourself: do you remember everything, if there were any difficulties. Repetition of the past is never superfluous. In our blog, we already wrote about. Familiarize yourself with the techniques and try to put them into practice.

3. Guide: How to start learning English from scratch on your own

Since English is still terra incognita for you, we have tried to select only the most necessary materials for you. It turned out to be a rather voluminous list, from which you will learn where to start learning English and how to do it correctly. Let's just say that the work ahead is not easy, but interesting. Let's get started.

1. Learn the rules of reading English

Theater begins with a hanger, and English begins with reading rules. This is a basic piece of knowledge, thanks to which you can learn to read English and pronounce sounds and words correctly. We recommend that you use a simple table from the Internet and learn the rules by heart, as well as get acquainted with the transcription of the English language. This can be done, for example, on the Translate.ru website.

2. Check how words are pronounced

Even if you know the rules of reading by heart, when learning new words, check how they are pronounced correctly. Tricky English words don't want to be read the way they are spelled. And some of them even refuse to obey any rules of reading. Therefore, we advise you to check the pronunciation of each new word in an online dictionary, for example, Lingvo.ru or on a special site Howjsay.com. Listen to the word a few times and try to pronounce it exactly the same way. At the same time, practice the correct pronunciation.

3. Start building vocabulary

Take visual dictionaries into service, for example, use the Studyfun.ru website. Bright pictures voiced by native speakers and translation into Russian will make it easier for you to learn and memorize new vocabulary.

What words to start learning English? We recommend beginners to focus on the list of words on the site Englishspeak.com. Start with simple words of a general theme, remember which words you use most often in your speech in Russian. In addition, we advise you to devote more time to studying English verbs. It is the verb that makes speech dynamic and natural.

4. Learn grammar

If you imagine speech as a beautiful necklace, then grammar is a thread on which you place word beads in order to end up with a beautiful decoration. Violation of the "rules of the game" of English grammar is punishable by misunderstanding of the interlocutor. And learning these rules is not so difficult, it is enough to study with a good textbook. We recommend that you take the first book in the Grammarway series of manuals translated into Russian. We wrote about this book in detail in our review. In addition, we recommend that you read our article "", from which you will find out what books you will need at the initial stage of learning English.

Do you find textbooks boring? It doesn't matter, pay attention to our series of articles "". In it, we state the rules in simple words, give many examples and tests to test knowledge. In addition, our teachers have compiled a simple and high-quality online English grammar tutorial for you. We also recommend reading the article "", in it you will find 8 good reasons to take up manuals, and also find out when you can do without textbooks in learning a language.

5. Listen to podcasts at your level

As soon as you started taking the first steps, you immediately need to accustom yourself to the sound of a foreign speech. Start with simple podcasts ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. You can find simple audio recordings with translation into Russian on the Teachpro.ru website. And to get the most out of listening, check out our article "".

Once you've built your basic English vocabulary, it's time to start watching the news. We recommend the Newsinlevels.com resource. News texts for the first level are simple. There is an audio recording for each news, so be sure to listen to how new words sound for you, try to repeat them after the announcer.

7. Read simple texts

While reading, you activate visual memory: new words and phrases will be easy to remember. And if you want to not only read, but also learn new words, improve pronunciation, listen to texts voiced by native speakers, and then read them. You can find simple short texts in textbooks at your level, such as New English File Elementary, or on the Internet at this site.

8. Install helpful apps

How to start learning English from scratch on your own if you have a smartphone or tablet at hand? English learning apps are mini tutorials that you will always have in your pocket. The well-known Lingualeo app is ideal for learning new words: thanks to the spaced repetition technique, new vocabulary will not disappear from your memory after a month. And to study the structure, the principle of "work" of the language, we recommend installing Duolingo. In addition to learning new words, this application will allow you to practice grammar and learn how to build sentences in English, as well as help you develop good pronunciation. Also, check out ours and choose from there the programs that interest you the most.

9. Study online

If you ask Google how to start learning English on your own, a caring search engine will immediately throw you a couple of hundred sites with various lessons, online exercises, articles about learning the language. An inexperienced student is immediately tempted to bookmark 83 “well, very necessary sites on which I will study every day.” We want to warn you against this: in the abundance of bookmarks, you will quickly get confused, and you need to study systematically, without jumping from one topic to another. Bookmark 2-3 really good resources that you will study on. This is more than enough. We recommend performing online exercises on the Correctenglish.ru website. Also check out our article "", you will find even more useful resources in it. And after you master the basics of English, check out the article "", where you can download a file with a list of useful materials and sites for learning the language.

4. Summing up

The list turned out to be rather big, and we tried to collect for you only the most necessary components of a successful study of the English language. However, we failed to use the most important skill - speaking. It is almost impossible to train him alone with himself. The most you can do is try to find a friend who is learning English. However, a friend with a higher level of knowledge is unlikely to want to work with a beginner, and a beginner like you cannot be an assistant. Moreover, when you work with a non-professional, there is a risk of "catching" his mistakes.

Self-study of the language has another fat minus - lack of control: you will not notice your mistakes and correct them. Therefore, we recommend that you think about classes with a teacher at least at the beginning of your journey. The teacher will give you the necessary push, help you choose the right direction of movement - exactly what a beginner needs.

Now you know how to learn English on your own from scratch. We admit that the path ahead is not easy, but if you have already set yourself a goal and are ready to work, positive results will not keep you waiting. We wish you patience and perseverance on the way to the intended goal!

And for those who want to achieve their goal faster, we offer with a teacher at our school.

2015-11-12

Hello to all readers of my blog!

As you already understood, in this article we will talk about how to learn English. without the help of a teacher. And, although, in my opinion, such a feat can be accomplished only under certain conditions, it is impossible to argue that this is impossible or accessible to a very small number of people.

And if you still decide to take this step, the steps outlined below will help you save energy, time and nerve cells on the way to your cherished goal.

Well, let's start debriefing!

Before reading my advice, let me remind you that there are a lot of resources online now that help you learn the language on your own. I myself use and recommend to everyone the notorious Lingvaleo. There free registration and a lot of valuable materials, in addition, you can buy an online course that is right for you (I advise you to start with this ), and learn the language according to a clear scheme developed by professional teachers.

Where to begin? Where to look and how to learn the material? Am I doing it right?..

All these questions make my head spin at first. But don't panic, friends! In fact, you are capable of much more than you can imagine!

So let's go!

  • Desire and motivation

Even the most honored and experienced teacher will not be able to teach you English if you do not want it yourself. After all, while studying with teachers, most of the training is also devoted to independent work. As the famous teacher N.A. Bonk: " A foreign language cannot be taught - it can only be learned».

If you are truly obsessed with learning English, then activities should bring you satisfaction, but it’s not worth raping yourself and trying at all costs to study and cram. Don't waste your time! It is better to postpone training until better times.

Learning English requires great patience, strong will, self-discipline and hard work. " Too many things! You will say, and you will be partly right. Sometimes the most assiduous and patient give up and give up halfway through. The reason for this is no serious motive. So even if you don't have one, invent it! Ready!? Do you want to get a job in a western company? Apply to an English speaking university? Or ? And that will fit.

  • From simple to complex

Do not rush to embrace the immensity and learn English as quickly as possible. Believe me, in teaching any foreign language there must be a clear structure, a developed system, otherwise " everything will be mixed up in the Oblonskys' house...”.

Do not spend too long classes at first, learn a lot at once rules or read English-language literature in the original. Start with

  1. learning elementary rules and their practice (in my rubric you will find them!)
  2. reading protozoa with a dictionary
  3. viewing with English subtitles
  4. auditions
  5. translating simple sentences of two or three words both from English into Russian and vice versa
  6. performing simple practical tasks
  7. writing summaries of what has been learned
  8. passage on the Internet.

A very effective, in my opinion, method of learning a language for those who want everything on their own is given in the book Ovadenko "English without a tutor" . This manual, coupled with audio accompaniment, will definitely help you at the initial stage.

  • Regularity is the key to success

Of course, the hardest thing is to force yourself to exercise regularly. It may be difficult, but this stability is probably one of the most important keys to success. Try to practice every day for at least 15-20 minutes. If the lesson is not long, then try to spend it as intensively as possible. Even if you don't feel well or are too tired, or repeat the words you just learned. If the language is always present in your life, it will become familiar and familiar to you.

  • Repetition is the mother of learning

Try to repeat the topics covered, refresh the learned words in your memory, watch a video you already know, listen to an audio recording, or re-read a story you already know. Not only does this undoubtedly help to consolidate the material covered, it is also sometimes useful to feel that you know something well and enjoy the fact that everything is clear to you.

  • Variety is good for everyone

Undoubtedly, you have one or two of your favorite ways to learn a language. Someone loves, and someone likes to watch videos or prefers to perceive. Use all the methods available to you: install a training program on your computer, learn the lyrics of your favorite artists and sing along to them, come up with sentences, watch training videos (which are also on my blog), communicate with native speakers via Skype, make flashcards with English subtitles, try to teach yourself a well-studied topic to a friend, wife or children. In short, any activity that forces you to work with English will be useful.

  • Choose time and place

Studying at home, where there are a lot of temptations (drinking tea, lying on the couch or not missing your favorite show), is not always effective, so it is useful to visit the library from time to time, where the very atmosphere is conducive to work or try to study right on the way to or from work.

  • Communicate in English at any opportunity e

If you are learning a language on your own and you don't have polyglot friends, then use every chance to put your English into practice. Communication in, special meetings and seminars for learners of English, tourists who accidentally met you, like-minded people you found on a social network - all this is from this area.

  • How to memorize words
  1. Firstly, it is necessary to remember not only the meaning of the word, but also how it is pronounced correctly. Nowadays, it is much easier to do this - you don’t have to painfully deal with transcription - just drive the word of interest into Google translator, and he will pronounce it and give out a few basic Russian language.
  2. Secondly, the word must be written. Get yourself a notebook in which you will write down the words with the translation.
  3. Thirdly, do not try to memorize a large number of words at once. It is better to choose from 5 to 10 words, but remember them for sure - how to do it.
  4. Fourth Use the learned words as often as possible. Beginners, especially children, memorize words very well using cards or during various competitions.
  5. And finally fifth, just improve your memory! Believe me, this is very important when learning a foreign language. Here, I can offer you what I use myself - to improve memorization skills with the help of Brainapps — a cool online platform specializing in this business. Guys, I didn’t know how exciting and effective it could be!
  • Work on your pronunciation

Phonetics is also an important part of the English language, because in English speech there are sounds that simply do not exist in Russian. Especially if you are doing it yourself, it brings additional difficulties. Somehow you must hear the correct pronunciation of a particular word and try to repeat it correctly. and video courses, English songs and films, conversations with native speakers, as well as my materials - will help you on your way to excellence.

  • Control your achievements

After a certain period of classes, arrange a mini-exam for yourself:

  1. complete tasks on the topics covered
  2. learn and retell the text containing the words and rules you already know
  3. pass .

In addition, it would be nice to demonstrate the acquired knowledge to a good friend, and even better to a teacher whose level of knowledge of the language is much higher than yours. Such periodic control will become an additional motive and, in addition, will allow you to understand how far you have progressed in learning English.

Finally

In no case do not think that you are not capable of something or cannot cope with something. Be patient, do not give up, believe in yourself, and you will succeed!

Don't be afraid to make a mistake or say something wrong when speaking in English. The roots of the notorious language barrier grow from there. These tips most likely will not help you overnight, but you will definitely become better at understanding and perceiving English speech and texts. An understanding will come that you can achieve a lot, which means there will be strength for further improvement!

Thank you for reading my article to the end - I think it was not in vain :)

There are many ways to learn a foreign language from scratch on your own. The first thing to do is to answer the question - why. Knowing the answer to this question is super important. Speech as a communication tool involves regular use - if knowledge and skills are not used, they are forgotten. The human memory is arranged in such a way that it hides unnecessary knowledge as far as possible. Everything that I managed to learn well will quickly be forgotten - then I will have to start everything from scratch.

Before you start cramming the alphabet, it is important to realize the goal:

  • communicate with employees of the airport, managers in stores, service personnel during tourist trips and understand the interlocutor well (colloquial variety);
  • conduct business negotiations with partners (business variety);
  • be able to read scientific (or fiction) literature (technical and literary versions);
  • communicate freely with residents of another country (read, write, speak).

Important advice! Motivation is essential to success. With the right goal setting, it is easy to master the necessary knowledge from scratch on your own and for free.

2 main ways in learning

There are two ways to quickly master someone else's way of linguistic communication.

The first is practiced at school: first they learn words, then put them into sentences, from phrases they construct a text. Phrases are built according to the laws of Russian grammar - this is a mistake. For this reason, secondary school graduates know a set of individual nouns and verbs, but it is difficult for them to quickly combine word forms into sentences, they have little experience in free communication.

The second approach teaches that it is better to study a foreign dialect in phrases, and to learn to speak - immediately with full-fledged constructions. The fact is that the word in the context acquires a new meaning - it is impossible to describe all the nuances with a set of strict rules. Any speech is phraseological: the meaning of a single sentence is not equal to the sum of the meanings of individual word forms.

Do you want to learn English quickly and easily? If you did not have time to do this at school or you did not have such an opportunity, do not despair! You will be able to speak English very soon with very little effort if you approach learning English the right way.

Coming out of your comfort zone is tough in the beginning, chaotic in the middle, and awesome in the end...because in the end, it shows you a whole new world !!! Make an attempt.

Getting out of the comfort zone is so difficult at first, chaotic in the middle, but how wonderful at the end ... Because at the end the whole world will open before you in a new way!!! Just give it a try.

In the modern world, there are many ways to learn foreign languages, and sometimes it is not easy for a person to understand this variety of methods, textbooks, schools and approaches. A few simple tips will help you take the first step and choose what is right for you and stay on track.

You can learn more about the intensive method of learning English from the article.

English for dummies from scratch. How to start?

The initial stage in learning English is the most difficult, but you have the most important thing - strength and desire

Where to start learning English?

Learning English from scratch simply won’t work, because you already have a certain amount of knowledge in your head. And this is thanks to the many borrowed words ( information, conflict, comfort), brand names ( Tide- clean, Safe guard- protection, Dove- dove), speaking the names of famous people ( Tina Turner(turner), Nicholas Cage(cell), names of musical groups ( No Doubt(without a doubt), Destiny's Child(child of destiny) spice girls(Pepper girls). Not to mention the common phrases thank you, hello, yes, ok, wow, which we have been using in Russian colloquial speech for a long time.

Without suspecting it, you already know English words and expressions. And this is the first thing that should inspire you! It remains only to direct the existing knowledge in the right direction.

How to choose a school and an English teacher?

The best option at the initial stage of learning a language is to find a teacher. According to a well-known saying, a student is not a vessel to be filled, but a torch to be lit. This torch can be lit for you by a teacher, with his twinkle in his eyes and a great desire and ability to teach. Most importantly, it must be a professional in his field .

“Here is a non-professional, if instead of building lively conversational situations, he makes you perform tasks at the level of meaning, i.e. just "drives" you through the textbook. Instead of constantly complimenting you, encouraging communication, he makes comments, rejoices at your every mistake if he comes to class without original materials (newspapers, magazines, books, radio programs, etc.), limited to teaching aids.” Ilya Frank

Russian teacher or native speaker?

And one more wish - for a start it should be a Russian-speaking teacher. Only he will be able to understand why you made this or that mistake, in simple words he will explain complex grammatical phenomena, the difference between words, comparing with the Russian language.

but one teacher is not enough to master the language. In your free time, do additional tasks, repeat the past. Whoever has the desire and interest will definitely do it.

And it is also possible that you have motivation, but for some reason you decided to study English on your own. Be prepared for the fact that this will take much more time and effort, as you will need to not only complete tasks, but also select and check them yourself! Here you can find channels for learning English on YouTube to help you.

Group English classes at an offline school are a great way to learn a language and meet new people

To clearly represent what you need to learn, you need to know its structure. Imagine that words (vocabulary) are musicians, each of them can play separately, their instruments make sounds (phonetics), and in order to organize them into a single orchestra, to coordinate them, they need a conductor (grammar).

If the musician does not appear (you don’t know the word), or if he comes, but takes false notes (pronounce it incorrectly), or the conductor gives the wrong command (break the grammar rule) - you won’t get a perfect symphony!

Important!

Vocabulary, grammar, phonetics are the three pillars on which the language rests. Only by studying them in a complex, you can master and understand the language, sound beautiful and correct.

Learn English words

Suppose a lost tourist does not know grammar, but he knows individual words - I, search, station, or only one word station. Even if he pronounces it with an accent and not quite correctly and turns to passers-by with this word, then, apparently, they will understand him. But if he does not know how the station is in English, they are unlikely to help him. Words are your base, constantly replenish your vocabulary.

The vocabulary of most native English speakers is 12000-20000 words, and in order to explain yourself in English, it is enough to learn 1500-2000 words. And this is not so much, especially if you set yourself the goal of learning 5 words daily.

There are a lot of ways to remember words, long lists of words in textbooks give way to colorful visual dictionaries, video materials on the Internet, where words on a specific topic are presented with their image and pronunciation. Or it can be paper cards that you can buy or make yourself.

Cards with a picture and a translation on the back will help you quickly learn English words.

Let English words surround you! The method of hanging notes with words around the house has proven itself well. Hang a note on the door, window, table with a word denoting this object, and believe me, very soon you will call these objects in English.

From the very beginning, create your own dictionary in which you will enter all new words and expressions. And in order to make the results more noticeable and have something to praise yourself for - number the recorded words, highlight them with different colors depending on how easy or difficult they are given to you. Be creative, turn your vocabulary into a unique creative masterpiece! See the video below for some vocabulary design ideas.

And most importantly: do not learn everything, but only the most necessary. Choose priority topics for yourself, for example, family, food, shopping, travel. Do not try to embrace the immensity. Language is taught all life!

Having found the right word in the dictionary, do not be too lazy to look through the entire dictionary entry. There are situations when it is better to learn not a single word, but a whole expression, especially if it sounds different in Russian, for example, to get acquainted with, to be afraid of, to catch a cold. Having memorized such phrases in a whole expression, you will remember them ready-made, like one long word.

Do not forget to repeat the written words from time to time, and then they will be remembered quickly and involuntarily. You can also install mobile applications for learning English words, which are now quite a lot on the Internet.

Learn English grammar

Grammar cannot be ignored. As much as advocates of alternative and communicative techniques fight against the “cramming” of grammar rules and boring exercises, grammar rules need to be taught and trained. At the initial stage of study, it will be easier for you to learn a ready-made rule and exceptions than to identify patterns on your own.

However, learning grammar should not be an end in itself. To consolidate the studied grammatical material, combine it with vocabulary. For example, having learned, make up a story about your family or working day, having learned the degrees of comparison of adjectives - describe the weather forecast yesterday and today, having studied the adverbs of quantity - write a recipe for your favorite dish.

Practice makes perfect

Consolidate the acquired knowledge in practice in all forms: reading, listening, writing, speaking. If you miss even one link from this chain, you run the risk of not overcoming the language barrier.

It should be simple articles and news. Or adapted literature, where at first unnecessary intricate constructions are excluded, there are explanations and exercises for reading comprehension. It is convenient to read books in electronic form with an electronic dictionary, because it is enough to point to an unfamiliar word and the dictionary will provide you with a translation, which is much easier compared to a paper dictionary.

Learn English by listening

It can be news, podcasts for beginners, stories. From time to time, use the passive listening method, let the English speech sound in the background. Believe me, the information will be remembered at a subconscious level.

Try to repeat what you hear from native speakers, imitating intonation and pronunciation. You can see an example of intuitive word memorization by watching the video.

Listen also to English songs, catch individual words, develop a language guess. It is especially helpful to start with simple songs where lines or constructions are repeated. For example, thanks to the song "All at once" (author Lenka), you will learn how to compare:

It is quite possible to repeat these lines even for a beginner, and by singing them, you will train your pronunciation and will be able to transform your speech.

A good start won't make you a fluent speaker yet. The tongue, like a plant, requires care, water it every day: read, listen, write, speak! Only then will it bear fruit.

Find your own path to the goal. Nobody knows you better than yourself. Try to think in English, describe everything that surrounds you. Let at first it will be separate words, then phrases, and soon sentences.

The French linguist Claude Ajezh once said: “Of all the languages on the planet, English is the most flexible and most responsive to changing reality” And it's true! Every year, the English language is replenished with 4,000 new words!

Try teaching English to someone who knows it worse. Yes, you will not learn anything new, but by explaining to another, you will better understand and consolidate your knowledge. You can study together with someone (relative, friend, colleague), compose short dialogues. Well, if it is a person who is just as eager to learn English as you are. Perhaps together it will be easier for you to understand.

The main thing is to practice regularly and as often as possible (ideally every day). Your results depend on how systematically you do this. It's like an athlete who needs to keep fit. This is the only way you will get used to the language. That's right, you need to get used to the language.

Finally:

The initial stage in learning English is the most difficult, it is at this stage that the foundation is laid. You have to overcome the language barrier and believe in yourself or lose the desire to learn the language forever. Remember the simple rules for successfully learning English:
